What is 2G, 3G and 4G about?

The “G” refers to generation so 3G is the third generation cell network.
The 2G network will soon go the way of vinyl records and video cassettes. Telstra was the first to discontinue providing 2G service in December of 2016. Optus is pulling the plug in April of 2017. Vodafone will discontinue their 2G service on 30 September 2017.
The 3G network has the most extensive infrastructure throughout Australia. Those in sparsely populated areas should have a 3G Mobile Alert.
